Office of Research and Discovery Team

The Harriot College Office of Research and Discovery is the place to go for resources supporting the research and creative activities of faculty and students in Harriot College. The ORD team provides support and assistance in negotiations for start-up funding, acquisition of internal seed grants, and in particular, the development, submission and management of external grants and contracts. We also serve as liaisons to the various offices within Academic Affairs, and partner with them to advance the research enterprise at ECU.

Harriot College ORD staff serve as the interface between faculty and administrators in the central grant offices at ECU. Harriot College research staff are responsible for pre-award budget and proposal development, and post-award management of grant awards. The pre-award staff are the first to contact when discussing plans to apply for extramural support. Post-award and departmental administration work together to help provide oversight for your award.

Associate Dean for Research

The Associate Dean for Research (ADR) partners with the dean to facilitate the necessary infrastructure to enable Harriot College scholars to engage in research and creative activity. With a team of four staff members, the ADR ensures proposals and awards are in compliance with relevant regulations and assists faculty and staff with navigating pre- and post-award management. The ADR also partners with Associate Dean Montgomery to identify and support faculty professional development and related opportunities to further research and creative activity, and with Associate Dean Berry to construct start-up packages for new faculty in collaboration with department chairs and colleagues in Academic Affairs.

She liaises with the Office of Research Administration, sponsors, and other project partners.

She works closely with PIs throughout the proposal process on the preparation of application materials that comply with federal, state, and university guidelines. Janie assists PIs with working in ECU’s electronic grants management system, eTRACS, as well as,, and other sponsor portals. She initiates eTRACS routing for internal approvals and liaises with the Office of Research Administration, sponsors, external institutions, and other collaborators on the final review and submission of proposals. In addition, she creates forms necessary to pay personnel on grant funds, processes effort reporting for assigned departments, and assists with the grant close-out process.

Scott Jamieson
Post-Award Grants Manager

Scott meets with PIs after they receive a sponsored project award to review contract language, reporting requirements, and salary distribution. These meetings include the PI, financial analyst, and department admin. The goal of the review is to ensure all parties understand the terms and conditions of the award. Scott monitors the health of the Hub portfolio by reviewing and responding to weekly and monthly reports to ensure issues are dealt with in a timely manner. He is the primary initiator of change requests through eTRACS during the life of a project. These can include cost exceptions, no-cost extensions, and subaward initiations and modifications. Scott works closely with REDE post-award staff to ensure compliance, and timely resolution of concerns, and to coordinate/facilitate any questions from the PI and admin staff.
